This book examines the impact of industrialization on peasant social formation. This is a case study of a village close to Bhilai Steel plant in Madhya Pradesh. Consequent on the establishment of Bhilai Steel Plant, the village, Bishalpur, came to be affected by two important forces industrial employment and in-migration. The impact of these forces on the social, economic political and ideological structures of the village has been examined.
The establishment of the steel plant has not been able to disintegrate the peasant economy of the village. But the peasant economy of the village. But the peasant economy has got articulated to the industrial system. The participation of the peasants in the industrial system has led to the development of a particular kind of labour force called here the ‘Peasant Worker’. The nature and consequences of the peasants’ articulation with the industrial system have been studied. The ‘Peasant Workers’ belong to a specific class of workers. They are different from other workers in the steel plant as well as other workers in the steel plant as well as other peasants in the field. They are peasant workers in the steel plant and worker peasants in the field.
