FACETS OF DEVELOPMENT: Studies in Karnataka

This book brings together essays on different aspects of the economics development of Karnataka in recent decades. The perspective is a national one as Karnataka is one of the major states of the country with its own unique features. In this background, the concern is with the process of social and economic development, not in the narrow economic sense of growth of state income, but in the larger sense of enabling the people to improve their own well-being as they see it.
If development is a process of expanding opportunities, and of providing the factors that enable people to respond to those opportunities, then what has been the experience of Karnataka? This broad issue is examined from different dimensions—from poverty alleviation programmes to the provision of integrated child development services.
