Democracy in America

English edition, published in 1838 and translated by Henry Reeve, marked the beginning of an ongoing discourse on democracy and the United States. In 1831, Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont journeyed through America to study its progressive prisons. The assignment appealed to them due to their fascination with American democracy. Spending nine months traveling across the nation, Tocqueville and Beaumont utilized social connections to engage with influential figures. Tocqueville documented his insights on government, the judiciary, and societal aspects, forming the foundation of “Democracy in America.”
