Description
This book delivered a series of lectures on the Revolts of 1857 to students at the Working Men’s College. The idea for the lectures came from a group of students who suggested to the College’s Council that a course on the history of British India be offered. Despite feeling underqualified for the task, the author accepted the request and found the preparation to be even more demanding than anticipated. The interest shown by the students was such that they requested a repeat of the course. Although the author was unable to fulfill this request, they decided to make available to the students the written materials used for the lectures, as well as additional lectures. It is possible that these materials may be of interest to others beyond the Working Men’s College, particularly given the recent events in India that have prompted England to take notice. The author, however, wishes to clarify that they have no expertise in Oriental learning and can offer only limited knowledge to those who are unfamiliar with India. Their aim is merely to assist those who seek to learn more about this subject.
