Due to the very old age and scarcity of this book, some pages are missing and may be hard to read due to the blurring of the original text. The tenth volume of the Assam District Gazetteer series provides concise accounts of the Khasi and Jaintia, Garo, and Lushai Hills. More detailed monographs on these tribes are being prepared separately. The districts have sparse populations, with Shillong as the only notable town. Administrative systems are simple, and industrial and commercial activity is limited. The Gazetteer has little to add beyond the upcoming tribal monographs. Gratitude to District Officers for reviewing proofs and Major Shakespear for critiquing the Lushai Hills’ account. Note that these Gazetteers were written before Bengal’s partition, and “Province” refers to the old Assam Province.
