Description
Due to the very old age and scarcity of this book, some pages are missing and may be hard to read due to the blurring of the original text. This Gazetteer presents a comprehensive overview of Lakhimpur district in Assam. The absence of a directory might puzzle those unfamiliar with Assam, but it can be explained by the district’s predominant focus on Dibrugarh, which has been extensively described. The villages in the district share common characteristics, making separate and detailed descriptions unnecessary. Nevertheless, the text references villages that are significant trade centers or known for specific industries. Major Cole, the Deputy Commissioner, is warmly acknowledged for diligently examining the Gazetteer’s accuracy during the proofreading process. This Gazetteer covers various aspects, including physical aspects, history under native rule and British administration, population, agriculture, forests, economic condition of the people, communications, trade towns, and local boards.
