IMPACT OF GLOBALISATION ON TRIBALS: In the Context of Kerala

Globalisation, which has swept through all the nations of the world, has brought about tremendous economic changes in India. But, its effect is differently experienced by different sections of people. In this book, the impact of globalisation on tribals in Kerala, the most backward and marginalised section in the state, on their livelihood, including employment and the availability of essential commodities, and on the sociocultural life, including their cultural and religious practices, health, education and on women, has been studied. At the outset the book gives a comprehensive description about the socio-economic and cultural situation of tribals in Kerala, particularly their land alienation and organisational struggle for land. It offers a few suggestions and strategies to counter the negative impact of globalisation on tribals. As the issue dealt with in this study has a national dimension today, the book is relevant for academicians and social activists both in Kerala and in India.

Mathew Aerthayil S.J. is Director, Indian Social Institute, Bangalore. He was also the Director of Socio-Religious Centre, Calicut, a reputed centre in Kerala for training, research and action for social change. As a social activist, he was deeply involved in the fisherman’s movement in Kerala and did a research study on the movement. He writes regularly both for national journals and Malayalam publications.
