GLOBAL INDIAN DIASPORA: History, Culture and Identity

The Indian diaspora today is one of the largest diasporas in the world. They form a strategic resource in intellectual, economic and cultural spheres besides being goodwill ambassadors of India in the land of their adoption. Recent developments in the fields of communication and transportation technology have facilitated the linkages between India and the Indian diaspora. The essays included in this volume examine the historical context of Indian emigration, the diaspora formation, the rise of Indian nationalism, and issues of identity in specific diasporic locations. Ajaya Kumar Sahoo is Assistant Professor at the Centre for Study of Indian Diaspora, University of Hyderabad, India. His research interests include international migration, Indian diaspora, religion, and social movements.

Laxmi Narayan Kadekar is Professor at the Department of Sociology, University of Hyderabad, India. His academic interests lie in the fields of urban sociology, urban and regional geography, social demography and Indian diaspora.
