The winsome, charismatic child-god who stole hearts along with butter, the sagacious, heroic yet humble King of Dwarka, the skilled diplomat and astute statesman of Mahabharata, is perhaps the deity that commands universal appeal, yet remains an enigma.
Brajbhumi, the land associated with the life and legends of Lord Krishna, has captivated the hearts and minds of millions through its rich tapestry of mythological, historical narratives and religious significance. Here the divine manifests in the mundane where every stone, tree and river resonates with stories associated with Lord Krishna's life. The divine mountain Giriraj Govardhan, considered a form of Lord Krishna himself, the serene Yamuna, known as one of his eight principal queens, as well as a river of spiritual sustenance, and the poignantly headless yet magnificent temples that rose again and again, encapsulating the faith of millions.
This region stood witness to the ebb and flow of great civilizations along with the rise and fall of powerful dynasties. It bore testimony to the peaceful coexistence of three great religions. It attained the pinnacle of art where revered icons made here, were carried to other parts of India and also influenced artistic traditions in various countries.
This book is in three parts. The first covers the rich history and culture of this region. The second delves into the divinity, historicity and pastimes of Lord Krishna. The third part takes the readers on a detailed spiritual journey of places associated with this pastoral deity, including his footprint across the entire country.

Aradhana Johri joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1980 and held senior positions in Government, both in Uttar Pradesh as well as Government of India, including that of Secretary GOI. She belongs to a family of civil servants, her father Shri R.S. Johri being her senior in the IAS in the same cadre. During her father's posting as District Magistrate Agra and then Commissioner Agra Division, which included Brajbhumi, she experienced first hand the power and mystique of this holy land.
She did a post graduation in History from Lucknow University, followed by a Masters in Public Administration from Harvard University, USA. Her interest in history and her passion for India's heritage laid the germs of this book. Her earlier writings have also reflected the same commitment. Her first book was on the cuisine of Awadh, while the second described the magnificent temples of Uttarakhand. This book on Brajbhumi is imbued with the same emotion and takes readers on a cultural and spiritual quest.
