This groundbreaking Companion offers readers an opportunity to reassess key themes in contemporary tourism studies in the light of recent theoretical developments in tourism studies and the social sciences, as well as dramatic changes in the operating environment for tourism. Comprising 48 specially commissioned essays, written by more than 50 acknowledged experts from around the world, it provides a critical review of current research in the field. The Companion takes readers to the frontiers of tourism research, covering current perspectives and topics. Within the Companion a broad range of issues are covered, including tourism's role in globalization, localization and contested places; the values, motivations and experiences of tourists; tourism, society and the environment, including sustainable tourism; and tourism policies, governance and the state's role in tourism development. The volume also sets an agenda for future tourism research.
