The book titled Chir Kalyani (Forever Auspicious) shares the engaging story of Shanta, the elder sister of Lord Rama and the daughter of King Dashratha. It starts with Dashratha giving her away to his dear friend King Rompada, even before Lord Rama and his brothers were born.

Shanta sacrificed her desires and dutifully obeyed her father and her adoptive father's wishes to marry Shringi Rishi, a rishi known for having a horn on his forehead, which made him appear odd-looking. She did this so that Shringi Rishi could give the boon of a son to both fathers. It's a beautiful narration of her thoughts. There are many characters in the story, such as Bhramari, the tribal girl who eventually becomes Shanta's friend, caregiver, and conscience keeper.

The tribulations of the adopting Mother, her attachment to Shanta, and the pain and dilemma of losing her to an odd-looking rishi living in an ashram are balanced by Shanta's demure acquiescence to her father's proposal to marry the Shringi rishi; just for the welfare of the kingdom and to fulfil the dream of the fathers for a son as an inheritor.

The selfishness of Dashratha and Rompada in marrying her to Shringi Rishi solely to have him perform the putrayesti yajna for a son is poignantly highlighted, along with the conflict between their desires to rule the kingdom and secure a male heir.
