Over the last seven decades, the agrarian economy of different regions of India has changed to varying degrees, the pace and pattern of transformation also differ from region to region. In this context, the book reflects the changes in various facets of the agrarian economy of Odisha vis-à-vis at the all-India level. Beginning with an analysis of the contours of Odisha’s agrarian economy, and a review of the debate on the mode of production in Indian agriculture in the 70s, the book provides an overview of the economic development of the state drawing parallels with other states. It analyzes the features of the state’s agrarian economy, factors triggering changes in the economy, especially the state-orchestrated land reforms and the voluntary programme of bhoodan. Transformation in some core areas of the agrarian economy, viz., the pattern of landholding and ownership, land tenancy, contours of agriculture, and the pattern of rural credit have been analyzed in some details. Analytical in nature, intend to excite interest and further research, the book will be useful to scholars of agrarian studies, agricultural economics, rural sociology, and rural development.
Sarat Parida is in Odisha Education Service (OES-I) College Branch, since 1999. He has completed all his academic degrees, viz., M.A. (1995), M.Phil. (1998), and Ph.D. (2011) from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar, Odisha. Over the last two decades, he has taught in some premier government colleges of Odisha, viz., V. Dev College, Jeypore, J.K.B.K. Government College, Cuttack, Government Women’s College, Sambalpur, and Government (Autonomous) College, Angul. A good orator and research scholar, his research areas include the agrarian and political economy of post-colonial Odisha. He is the author of Politics and Agrarian Changes in Post-Colonial Odisha (2014) and has published more than forty research papers and articles in reputed journals.
